Keep These in Mind

Brazil is a vibrant country in South America. Home to 60% of the Amazon, it is the fifth-largest country in the world. It is a popular destination for many reasons including its stunning beaches, friendly people, and coffee.

Brazilians love tourists.

They will embrace you like family from the moment they meet you. And we really do mean “embrace”. Expect both hugs and a kiss on the cheek as their way of saying “it’s nice to meet you.”

Portuguese is the primary language.

But remember, Brazilians are very hospitable and will try to figure out a way to communicate. Consider learning some Portuguese before you go. Key phrases to master: Todo bom? (How are you? All good?), Eu nao entendo (I don’t understand) and futebol (make sure you know this one!)

Brazilians are boisterous and demonstrative.

You’re going to need to embrace this way of life if you want to get your waiter’s attention. Acting out “bring me another drink” or “check, please” across the restaurant is perfectly acceptable.

Be prepared for noise.

In big cities, there is music, cars, buses, and motorcycles. In the country, dogs and roosters rule the night. Bring earplugs.
